Discovery of America

Seems like lots of nations want to claim credit for "discovering" America. The explorer commemorated in this statue was Chinese. He allegedly got to America hundreds of years before Columbus. When we speak of America's discovery, I don't think we're using the right term. Europeans invaded an already populated continent.

Keep writing, Roz. We're reading, and we're interested! And you're right about Columbus. In a letter from his first voyage, the 1492 voyage of "discovery," he writes that he found many islands and many people and of them all he "took possession" for the king and queen of Spain. Incidentally, Columbus never really admitted that what he found was a new world and not the "Indies" he was looking for.

Hi Roz,
When Marie sent me the link to your blog I was so fascinated that I read for over an hour, catching up on the archives and looking at the fantastic photos. Thank you for giving us a look at China, a country along with Japan that I have always wanted to visit. You are a brave woman - I think I'll just go with a tour group. Looking forward to more.
